For a sustainable future
Welcome to The Salter Centre for cleantech innovation.
A community of engineers based in Edinburgh, Scotland. We are a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO).
Sustainable innovation and engineering education
The Salter Centre owns and operates an unusual building complex that provides a joint base for innovative engineering companies working in areas that include renewable energy, heat decarbonisation, sustainable use of natural resources and climate repair.
The Salter Centre also works with schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions to support the practical and intellectual development of engineers to help equip them to respond creatively to pressing global challenges.
Our founder, Professor Stephen Salter
Innovation in action
The Salter Centre fosters a dynamic community of innovative engineering companies and start-ups, all committed to excellence in the development of sustainable technologies and all able to give and take practical help with one another.

Aeroflow
Aeroflow is developing a shape-shifting trailer that reduces aerodynamic drag to cut fuel use and emissions in road freight, supported by the UK Department for Transport.

Edinburgh Designs
Edinburgh Designs focuses on designing and installing wave and tidal energy research facilities.

Flowcopter
Flowcopter has developed the FC100, a long-endurance cargo UAV using a patented hydraulic system to transport heavy payloads cost-effectively for logistics, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid.

Hoerbiger
Hoerbiger is a multinational compression systems company whose Emission Recompression System captures and recompresses fugitive gas emissions to reduce methane releases to near zero.

No Pollution
No Pollution Industrial Systems, founded in 2007 in Edinburgh, delivers industrial soundproofing and HVAC solutions focused on energy recovery and climate control, with global installations.

Ocean Cooling Technology
Ocean Cooling Technology is developing Marine Cloud Brightening systems that use sea salt particles to increase cloud reflectivity and help reduce climate change impacts.

Orchid Solar
Orchid Solar develops modular solar thermal systems providing high-temperature clean heat for industrial processes, based on Oxford University research and tested in India and Kenya.

Q-zeta
Q-zeta stores low-carbon energy when it is cheap and supplies it to homes on demand, helping reduce emissions from domestic heating.

Quoceant
Quoceant is an engineering consultancy advancing offshore renewables through innovative design, project delivery, and its Q-Connect marine connection systems.

Sequentec
Sequentec develops control, electrical, and communication systems for renewable energy storage technologies from prototype to deployment.

SynchroStor
SynchroStor is creating advanced compressor technology to support industrial decarbonisation and long-duration energy storage, backed by the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero.
Through shared access to common areas within the building everyone has hands-on access to professionally-supported workshops and benefit from inter-company synergies.
Our supporters
Contact us if you’re interested in hearing about the different ways you can support our work here at The Salter Centre. We are looking for support to expand our space so more cleantech companies can locate here and ways to improve access to our training for underserved groups including school children and students.
Our facilities
Our R&D facility features offices, laboratories, a crane-served test area, a fully equipped machine shop, and a welding shed. It also includes outdoor storage, parking, communal amenities, and an 11kV power supply for industrial operations.
