Our history
Founded by Professor Stephen Salter, the Salter Centre is a hub for engineering innovation and the training of future engineers.

The Salter Centre (formerly known as the Lothian School of Technology) was founded by Professor Stephen Salter – a brilliant engineering designer, fearless problem-solver, inspired craftsman, and peerless communicator. He was committed to training engineers and encouraging low-carbon technologies that can help bring the planet back to health.
Stephen made huge impacts in multiple areas including wave power, marine current turbines, wind turbines, water bags for suppressing explosions, demining, Stirling engines, high-power hydraulic transmissions, hydrofoil ships, nuclear disarmament, making rain and cloud brightening to cool the planet.
The Salter Centre, Stephen’s own ‘skunkworks’ is home to a group of pioneering enterprises, each inspired by his body of work and by his character - each company committed to the practical and intellectual training of young people.
